Nigeria’s Green Hawks mark a historic new chapter as the country’s first-ever national netball team prepares for its international debut in Nairobi.
A new chapter in Nigerian netball has officially begun.
The Nigeria Netball Federation has unveiled the Green Hawks, Nigeria’s first-ever national netball team, ahead of the team’s historic international debut in Nairobi.
The unveiling marks an important moment for a sport that is beginning to establish a stronger national presence, bringing together players who will carry Nigeria’s colours onto the international stage for the first time.
For the Federation, the Green Hawks represent more than a team. They are a visible expression of a wider commitment to developing netball in Nigeria and creating a pathway from grassroots participation to national representation.
A TEAM FOR A NEW CHAPTER
The Green Hawks have been established at a significant point in the development of Nigerian netball.
For the first time, Nigerian players will have the opportunity to compete internationally as a national team, giving the country a representative identity within the global netball community.
The team will enter competition carrying the Nigerian colours and representing the work being undertaken to build the foundations of the sport across the country.
The significance of the moment extends beyond the players selected.
It creates a reference point for the young Nigerians who will discover netball, take up the sport and aspire to represent their country in the future.
THE GREEN HAWKS
The name Green Hawks gives Nigeria’s first national netball team a distinct identity while reflecting the country’s national colours.
The hawk represents movement, focus and purpose — qualities that speak to the character expected of a team beginning a new international journey.
But the identity is also about continuity.
The Green Hawks are part of a broader national development pathway being established by the Nigeria Netball Federation, connecting grassroots participation with talent development, competition and national representation.
THE ROAD TO NAIROBI
The unveiling comes as the Green Hawks prepare for their international debut in Nairobi.
Nigeria will face Kenya, Uganda, Malawi and Zambia as part of its campaign towards the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney.
For the players, the competition will provide their first experience of international netball as representatives of Nigeria.
For the Federation, it is an opportunity to begin establishing Nigeria’s presence within international competition while gaining valuable experience that can contribute to the continued development of the national programme.
BUILDING FROM THE GRASSROOTS
The creation of the Green Hawks is closely connected to the Federation’s grassroots-first approach.
A national team cannot exist in isolation from the system beneath it.
The long-term development of Nigerian netball requires opportunities for young people to discover the game, access coaching, participate in competition and progress through structured development pathways.
The Green Hawks provide an important destination within that pathway.
Their emergence also gives young players a tangible example of where their own netball journey can lead.
From a school court or community programme to competitive netball and, ultimately, the national team — the pathway is beginning to take shape.
A MOMENT FOR NIGERIAN NETBALL
The unveiling of the Green Hawks marks the beginning of something that has never existed before in Nigerian netball: a national team carrying the country’s identity into international competition.
As the team prepares to take the court in Nairobi, the moment belongs not only to the players but to everyone contributing to the growth of the sport.
Players.
Coaches.
Officials.
Schools.
Communities.
Supporters.
And the young Nigerians who will come after them.
The first chapter has been written.
Now the Green Hawks prepare to make history on court.
A new team.
A new identity.
A new chapter for Nigerian netball.
